Wiele lat później do sprawy zabójstwa na Smutty Nose wraca znany dziennikarz śledczy Thomas Janes (Sean Penn), który dostrzegł analogie między zbrodnią popełnioną 100 lat temu, a tą, którą właśnie się zajmuje. Prosi żonę Jean (Catherine McCormack), fotograficzkę, o zrobienie zdjęć miejsca, gdzie rozegrały się te wydarzenia. W wyprawie na Smutty Nose towarzyszy parze brat dziennikarza Rich (Josh Lucas) i jego dziewczyna Adaline (Elizabeth Hurley). Rozmyślając nad sprawą zabójstwa Jean zauważa pewne analogie z obecną sytuacją..
