Jej uroda i znajomość języka sprawiają, że zwraca na nią uwagę major SS, Eduard Rugemer. Na jego rozkaz Irena trafia do hotelu zamieszkanego przez nazistów. Ma pomagać w kuchni i kierować grupą Żydów, którzy naprawiają ubrania żołnierzy. Nad placówką czuwa Schultz, który uczy ją zasad przetrwania i trzyma z dala od cudzych spraw. Irena nie potrafi zamknąć oczu na otaczające zło. Gdy staje się świadkiem okrutnej zbrodni, przysięga, że będzie chronić ludzkie życie. Niebawem dowiaduje się o planach likwidacji getta. Ryzykując życie, ukrywa Żydów w domu Rugemera, u którego została gosposią.
